Any Questions, Friends?

Hello friends,

As everything has an end, we're also reaching the end of this show with just two more episodes to go. And I thought it'd be a good idea to dedicate a post for questions that you guys and girls might have for us.

It can be any question regarding this series, any certain event, Turkish tradition & customs, food or songs that you come across while watching the series and you want to know more about. Or anything about this blog you can ask and we'll try to answer most of them if not all.

It would be nice if you send your questions to either:

- our contact address (whatisfatmagulsfault(at)gmail(dot)com) with a [Question] tag in the subject of the mail

or

- right below under this post as a comment. Starting the comment with a [Question] tag will make it easier for us to find questions.

Also, if your question is about an event that takes place in a certain episode, please include the episode number and the time at which the event occurs in the episode.

The questions and answers will be published in a week or so. So hurry :)

Thanks for sticking around, and see you!

i think she cried, because she was saying bye. at the henna the brides must cry when the cover is on them. and about the sheets, im not sure but she wasnt a virgin so mayb thats y she cried

No Names said...

question about customs:

is it a custom to give cologne to whom visiting the patient??? if not then why they use cologne when they visit Sukrei bey in hospital ?

No Names said...

I think it's like a custom to cry in Henna, remember when it was MAriam's Henna Muqaddes told her no you must cry and in FG's Henaa they checked on her took off the veil to see if she cried or not

so I think strongly it's a custom but I don't know why :)

Zarauthman said...

? is fatmagul a true life story ?

arjuhi said...

[Question] is fatmagul sucu ne a true life story

Leyla said...

An old custom is that on the wedding night, the bride and groom are given some privacy to consummate the marriage.  Following that, the woman must come out and show her bed sheets because they believed that there should be blood on the sheets to prove the woman was a virgin.  I think this is why she was ashamed about the sheets.  The kina gecesi (henna night) is very emotional, people read from the koran and the music is all very emotional and overwhelming.  It's like saying goodbye to your life as you know it because you don't belong to your family anymore but to your husband.

Leyla said...

It's kind of like when we knock on wood..I don't know the background to it but that is when they use it (as in thank god we weren't hurt/after you have been frightened).  They do also knock on wood though and then usually pinch their ear lobe.

Leyla said...

It is a lot more involved process than you think.  For example, they have to edit the whole program so that they can add the subtitles in and get the timing right, otherwise the subtitles would just be coming up all out of order.  Also people have lives other than just translating, they have other jobs, families, friends so I think it is quite good that just one or two people can manage to sub an hour and a half programme in a week

Leyla said...

Personally I would suggest SultanAhmet may be better as more of the touristic things are there.  Taksim is more nightlife and shopping in my opinion, which I love, but perhaps not for a family that want to do all the touristic things in Istanbul.

Erdal Yilmaz said...

I could't put it any better myself Leyla. Thanks for understanding:)

Erdal Yilmaz said...

Work in on it already, Aiming for Tuesday the latest. See what we can do :)

They do that if they get scared suddenly. its like supposed to slow down your heartbeat or something like that

selma said...

Oh come on. Everybody does bad things from time to time. Turkey is a SECULAR country. About 98% are muslim i think. But they dont really practice it piously. So yeahh :)

I am an African-muslim woman and i was so surprised of how the turkish culture is bit similar to mine. FGSN was my second turkish series and from now on I'm such a big fan for the Turkish film world. I look forward too visit Turkey in during the Ramadan. FGSN is a such delighted series  My faveorate characteres -(Maryam Abla and Rahmi Abe).all of the actors and actress in this series did a great job and they  deleverd a beautiful act.Sspecialy the actor who played karim character,he deserves an oscar nomination and Mukadis too. I know some of the fans in this series they don't like her, but she performed exellent in her act-chrct, the way she goes, the talk and her less empathy with out her the series would be boring.

Marowkhalil said...

she cried because in a turkish Henna night the bride is supposed to sit and cover her face with a red scarf, her female  friends and family surround her and sing sad songs till she cries, when they notice her tears they stop singing the sad songs and start to dance with her. Actually the songs aren't sad but they talk about how she will leave her father's house, how her mother 'll miss her, how she is going to a new family and her old family 'll take second place in her life. So it's not a bad crying it's emotional like when you cry at the airport.

Guest said...

 well the bed sheets.
you know Fatmagul in this series is a village girl and in villages the girl's honor is a big deal and you know she is a good girl if she is a virgin on her wedding night, that is what she was raised to believe.
she wasn't ashamed of sleeping with  Kerim the night before, she was just ashamed because the bed sheet was clean(bloodless) on her wedding night, because everyone she knew at her village told her that by being raped she is stained for life, she is not respectable any more and that is why Kerim told her in the same episode we don't have to hide we did nothing wrong whe she refused to go out for dinner or lunch i don't remember.

Sultanahmet, I visited twice already and would go back in a heart beat.. You are near everything and all hotel staff and shops , are so super friendly to assist. Take your vacation before the fasting [Ramadan} its a till more holy and its also beautiful but rude to eat in front of fasting Muslims :) .. Take a tour which is also helpful if you are limited in time.. Best part is the GRAND BAZZZAR.. it has everything you want.Best travels to you!

Turkdost said...

In Turkey, is it common for weddings to take place at the home or in a marriage hall in a Western sort of style? I was wondering about this, since in the entire series there is very little mention of Islam and nobody ever enters a mosque. I know Turkey is a secular country, but I thought that perhaps for weddings, a mosque would be used. Do you think the writers decided to go a fully secular route to avoid any controversy with viewers as this could be an issue in Turkey? Nonetheless, I was wondering if anyone could clarify- given the themes of village life and honor- the lack of anyone in the show praying? This is not to say that we expected a religious show at all, but generally when people go through tough times in life, they might enter a place of worship to just or relax, but there is none of this in this show. Thanks.

i don't know about Turkish but let me tell you dear that there are hardly any Muslim countries that promote Islamic values in TV shows. Even I strongly believe that as a Muslim we should since Christians, Jews and especially Indians mostly show there religious stuff in TV shows. Don't know why should our writers always have to go on a fully secular route to avoid controversy while no one else does. As to your other question related to the weddings well in my Muslim country we hardly have weddings at mosques. They are usually in wedding halls & backyard of the house :) may be its like that in Turkey too

I am so thankful!!! Because of you I have been able to watch this interesting programme. Since 2008 I watch Turkish series on YouTube.  Benim Dede was from Izmir and baba ane from Istanbul, they always talked to me about their life in Izmir. I have visited your country (my country too). I believe that home is where your heart bits fast and my heart pounds when I watch on my laptop, in absolute darkness,Turkish life in Turkish serials, and I get the feeling that I am living there with you...
Till I manage to speak decent Turkish please keep translating.

The neighbour is judgmental and angry because they believe she is stained - no smoke without fire and all that like she asked for it.

Leyla said...

I have never known a wedding to take place in a mosque (camii).  Mostly the wedding parties take place in a salon (hall) or backyard.  If it is in a hall or hotel, then the registrar will usually attend for the legal part, otherwise they go to the town hall for the legal registrar part (as Fatmagul and Kerim were already legally married, they had Kadir abi perform this function just so that it seemed more real).  They will usually have a religious blessing separately and this is normally just done at home with a few people and the hoca will come to bless the wedding and to confirm they are marrying of free will.  There are still a lot of marriages in Turkey that have the Islamic marriage ceremony which means more to them and don't actually get married legally with the registrar.

Leyla said...

I think you will probably like Kuzey Guney because it is written by the same writers as FGSN (translated on viki.com at the moment) but hopefully there will be a new series soon to enjoy also.

first of all I would like to thank you for your infinite efforts. I can't thank you enough. you have done an amazing job. we really appreciate it.

second, I would like to express my opinion in the series. it is one of the best series i have ever watched in all languages. the story, the acting were fantastic. the case that they are discussing in the series is noble and worth watching. and the message that they are trying to deliver is worth paying attention to. I really wish justice can be spread over everyone. its such a shame to know that this story is actually happening in many countries and nothing is being done to support the victim.

thanks again for the amazing efforts :)

Lola said...

[Question]: Sorry this question might have been asked before. But there are so many I couldn't go through every single one of them. My question is did Fatmagul and Kerim consummate the marriage on their wedding night? I know that her embarrassments from the unstained sheets hinted that they had in fact consummated the marriage but it could also be interpreted as her feeling weird about the fact that nothing happened that night. If they had consummated the marriage, then why were they so awkward around each other?

Guys i want to thank you for your great efforts translating this amazing show! I would like to see you translate maybe Assi? I know it;s an older show, but also one of my favorite Turkish shows. You have made it so easy for us to understand the show in the native language, coz i hate to hear it in Arabic. The actors lose their caracter with dubbing. I even learnt some turkish words! Thanks again, and keep it up!

I would like to know if there were any interviews done with the actors after the shows end  if there are any you should post them with english subtitles because it would be interesting to get a summation from the actors on their opinions and experiences while doing this show and it will be an appropriate ending to this website as well
                                            Thank You

Hello everybody :)

I know that this is not right place to ask this question but I don't know where else or who else to ask about it. The topic is movie FETIH 1453. Since I'm from Bosnia our tradition is narrowly connected with Otoman empire and Islam. This movie is very interesting to us. But, however, there are no indication that it will be screened in our theaters. When we ask them why not, they give us a plan answer there is not shown interest for the movie which is complete lie! Anyway, my question is: is there a possibility that the team who did FNS translation do the same thing for this movie??? Please?
And does anybody know whether this movie is already translated somewhere on internet???
thank you in advance :)

Great job done guys by translating in English...I'm not Arab or Turk instead i'm Indian and lives in UAE. I was just searching youtube and i found this series. I first saw 1st episode without english subtitles but i got interested in it that upto 40 episodes i watched it without english subtitles and understood it by my own. But later on i found its available on this site with eng subtitles. Then i started again and finished all the 80 episodes with eng subtitles..i liked turkey very much...see where turkey is now a days and it was time (around 1200 - 1500 ac) when Turks used to attack on India..:) Razia Sultan may be you guys know was first muslim lady emperor in India from Turk..!!

? Hello and thank you for your wonderful translation. I really enjoyed the show and in fact i was in a team that translated the episodes in the greek language since this show has many fans in Greece. So thank you for that too. I wanted to ask if you have made up your mind about the next series you are going to translate and if you have ever done a translation using the viki.com site. If I may suggest the new series KARADAYI. Unfortunately we dont speak turkish but in viki.com provides easy way to segment the subtitles and we would be very happy if u provide us your turkish language knowledge and we do the whole segmentation. I have already opened a channel and looking for someone to work together in this new project. Please if you are interesting contact me at myrtos@hotmail.com Thanking you in advance for any of your help and I wish you success to your next projects. I gonna follow you!! :) Greetings from Greece

Hi, thanks a lot for the great job! I know it is a little bit late to ask questions, but I just wanted to know if you have any idea about the filming locations ? I tried to find out, I couldn't find much information , i only found out about the Butik Hotel in Izmir. I wanted to know the name of the hotel that kerim and fatma went to in episode 78, for instance, but I couldn't . Thanks :)
